A humble collection of suggestions for improvement and possible bugs

Hi! I've been using Turbobulls more extensively over the last weeks (now became PRO!) and wanted to share some feedback. Most of it is workflow improvements that I think would make portfolio and cash account management much easier, plus a few bugs/issues I've run into.

💡 Improvements / Feature requests
  1. Workspace currency dropdown: suggest relevant currencies. Currencies used by my other accounts and assets should appear as suggestions next to the default. For example, if I have accounts in SEK, SEK should be listed right after the default so I can switch quickly without having to scroll down every time.

  2. Batch action: toggle inflow/outflow. After selecting multiple transaction rows, let me switch them between inflow and outflow in one action.

  3. Batch action: edit transaction type. After selecting multiple transaction rows, let me change their Type in bulk.

  4. Allow categories on transfers and deposits. Type and category describe different aspects of a transaction, so allowing both would make cash-flow analysis much more useful. For example:

    • Current account → Savings account: Type = Transfer, Category = Savings
    • Bank account → Broker: Type = Deposit, Category = Investments
  5. Cash-flow Sankey diagram in the Breakdown tab. A Sankey diagram showing where money comes from (Money In) and where it goes, by category, would help a lot in understanding income, spending, savings, investments, transfers, etc.

  6. Forecasted dividends. In addition to dividends already received, show an estimated dividend forecast based on past dividend payments, current holdings and current exchange rates.

  7. Improve discoverability of "+ Add to watchlist". I initially thought watchlists weren't supported, because my first instinct was to search for the stock via the Ctrl+K search bar. It would help if stocks could be added to a watchlist directly from the search results, or if the existing button (the one on the right) was easier to find.

  8. Support transfers in Wallet transaction imports. It would be very useful if the import supported:

    • A Type column with the values Deposit and Withdrawal
    • The complementary columns FromBroker, ToBroker, FromAccount and ToAccount

This would make importing transfers between bank accounts and brokers much easier.

  9. Overview on small screens: show the net worth chart first. On large screens the summary cards (Today, This week, This month, YTD, Top mover today) work well. On small screens, though, they push the Total net worth chart down, even though the date range picker controls the chart, not the cards. Some options:

    • Show the chart above the cards on small screens.
    • Make the cards a horizontally scrollable row, like the top cards in Cash & Income.
    • Make the cards section collapsible/expandable.

Personally, I find the chart the most useful thing to see first.

  10. Allow dismissing warnings for the current session. Warnings like "Pricing Data Unavailable" are shown at the top in orange and can't be closed. Once I've seen one, I'd like to dismiss it, especially when it's something I can't fix myself, e.g. "Unable to fetch rates for 12 assets". A dismissed warning could come back next session or if the situation changes (e.g. the number of affected assets increases).

🐛 Bugs
  1. Incorrect amount when editing transactions with more than two decimals. When editing a transaction, entering more than two decimal places moves the decimal separator on save. For example, changing the amount from 1234.56 SEK to 1234.5678 SEK saves it as 123456.78 SEK.
  2. Wrong tooltip on the Reset button. On the edit page of a broker transaction, hovering over the Reset button shows the tooltip Buy.
🤔 Maybe bugs / Maybe features
  1. Duplicate detection ignores transaction time (hh:mm:ss). Duplicate detection only compares year, month and day, not the time. So two similar but legitimate transactions made, say, 10 minutes apart are flagged as duplicates and skipped. The "exclude duplicates" toggle doesn't really solve this: turning it off would also import the true duplicates. Including the full timestamp in the comparison (when the import provides it) would fix this.
  2. Tiny negative-balance rounding issue when closing positions. A sell that should close a position exactly is sometimes rejected because the resulting quantity is an extremely small negative number (floating-point/rounding error). The negative-balance check could round quantities to the asset's supported precision, or accept a small tolerance, before rejecting the transaction.

Thanks! Happy to provide examples, better explanations, or help reproduce any of the issues above.

Hi @thepatientvisigoth, as promised, here's an update on everything you raised.

First, a big thank you for the anonymized Avanza and Montrose exports you sent us: they taught us a lot about how those two brokers write their files, and both imports are out today in 1.78.0. The changelog says so too. You've earned two badges along the way: Broker scout, for the exports that became those imports, and Bug hunter, for the bugs below that are now fixed.

    Bugs

    1. Amount with more than two decimals. I haven't been able to make this happen yet: typing 1234.5678 (or 1234,5678) saves 1234.5678 for me. While digging, though, we found and fixed two related number problems: pasting an amount the way the app shows it (like 1.234,56) saved it a thousand times smaller, and numbers with four or more decimals were shown with stray separators. To track yours down, could you tell me:

      • Which screen: a cash account transaction (Inflow / Outflow) or a broker transaction (Amount, Price, Fee)?
      • Your number format under Settings > General
      • What you typed or pasted, character by character (made-up digits are fine, as long as the separators are the ones you used)
      • Where you saw the wrong amount: in the list, or in the field when you opened it again?
      • Your device and browser, and whether the browser translates the page

No need to share any real figures: if you can make it happen with made-up numbers, ideally in an empty test workspace, the steps alone tell me everything I need.

    2. "Buy" tooltip on Reset. Fixed. It came from the form itself, so the same stray tooltip also showed elsewhere in that form and in the import steps. All gone now.

    Maybe bugs

    1. Duplicates and time of day. You were right, thanks for spotting it. It's fixed in today's update (1.78.0):

      • Two rows in the same file now count as the same transaction only if their times match too, so two purchases ten minutes apart both import. A line the file genuinely repeats is still dropped.
      • Each transaction you already have accounts for one row of the file, not every row like it that day. So if one coffee is already in your account and the file has two, only one is skipped.
      • In cash account imports you can now click a row's label to import it anyway, or to skip it, as broker imports already allow. That's also the way in for two identical purchases on the same day in a file that has no times.

Why we kept the day, not the time, for transactions already in your account: many banks and brokers give only the day, not the time (Avanza's and Montrose's exports among them), so often there's no time to compare. And when you add a transaction by hand, the date field starts at the current date and time, so a coffee you bought at 10:05 but typed in that evening is saved at, say, 21:13. When your bank file later lists that coffee at 10:05, the times don't match, but it's the same coffee. If we required the times to match, every transaction you had typed by hand would be imported a second time and your balance would be off. So against your account we match by day, account and amount, one for one, and the time only decides between rows that both come from the file, where the times are real.

If anything still looks off, describe the two rows with made-up amounts: what matters is the date, the time, the account, and whether the amounts are equal.

    2. Tiny negative balance when closing a position. Confirmed and fixed in the same update: a sale that leaves less than a millionth of a share now counts as closing the position. If you still see it, describe the position with made-up numbers (how many buys, and how many decimals the quantities have) and I'll look straight away.

    Your ten ideas

They're clear and well argued, and we're going to implement many of them. I'll post in this thread as each one ships, and the first one to ship earns you the Idea maker badge too.

Hi @thepatientvisigoth, as promised, here's where your ten ideas stand. Five of them are in the app now (1.80.0 and 1.81.0), which earns you the Idea maker badge, and there's a shoutout to you in the changelog. I also have one question for you, at the end.

      In the app now

Your currencies first. The display currency list starts with the currencies your accounts and assets use, right after the default, so SEK is at the top instead of far down the list.

Switch inflow and outflow in bulk. Select wallet transactions and use Switch inflow and outflow. Undo is there if you change your mind.

Change the type in bulk. Select wallet transactions and use Change type to turn them into deposits to or withdrawals from a broker, or back into regular transactions, also with Undo. If the broker already has its own record of the same money, it offers to remove that copy in the same step, so nothing is counted twice. Broker Movements has the same action, between money from outside and the broker's own income or expenses.

Add to watchlist, easier to find. The button at the top of Assets is now filled, with a star, so it stands out. And your first instinct works now: press Ctrl+K on Assets, type a stock you don't have, and the search offers Add to watchlist with what you typed already filled in. Every result has a star: one click adds it, a second removes it, and the window stays open so you can add several. We also tried listing market results right under your own assets, but that made the list harder to read when you just want to check your holdings, so the search hands you over instead.

Closing the price warnings. The warnings at the top of a page now have an X and stay closed for the rest of your visit. A small count in the top bar brings them back, and a warning returns by itself if another price stops loading, as you suggested.

      Not doing, and why

Categories on transfers and deposits. We thought hard about this one and decided against it. The type already says how the money moved, so a category on top says it a second time and can contradict it. And a transfer is two rows, money out of one account and into the other, so a category on it would count once as money out and once as money in, and cancel out. What we did instead: the Breakdown now shows money to and from brokers in its own row, Deposits & withdrawals, and leaves transfers between your own accounts out of the categories (the Accounts tab still shows both sides). For your own labels like Savings or Investments, use tags: they work on every type, both sides of a transfer get them, and the wallet can filter by them.

Overview on small screens: chart first. We tried it and decided to keep the cards on top. To us, Today's gain is the most useful thing to see first on a phone, and with the chart first it moved out of view. Since this really comes down to preference, we'd rather let everyone choose the order of their own Overview, which is on the list below.

      Not yet

      We're still looking into these:

      • Cash-flow Sankey diagram in the Breakdown tab
      • Forecasted dividends
      • Transfers in wallet transaction imports
      • Choosing the order of the Overview yourself

      A question for you

About the price warning ("Pricing Data Unavailable"): it should be rare. It's meant only for when we genuinely have no price: an asset our price sources don't cover, an asset you added yourself without prices, or a date range set so far in the past or the future that there are no prices for it. "Unable to fetch rates for 12 assets" sounds like more than that, so I'd like to understand when you saw it:

      • which page it was on
      • the date range you had selected
      • what it listed: currency pairs or assets, and if assets, what kind (shares, funds, ETFs, crypto, or ones you added yourself) and on which exchange

      No names or amounts needed.

Thanks again for such a careful list: it shaped both releases. I'll post here again as the next one ships.

Sorry for the delay. Just in case it is still helpful, I see the following warning admonition (I'm fine with showing the ISINs here):

    Warning admonition

in both Overview and Portfolio pages, with the default date range. All of them are custom assets of Swedish funds (via Avanza) that I created when importing transactions in a broker account.

But I guess it makes sense, because Turbobulls doesn't know where to fetch data from for custom assets 👍

Thank you so much for coming back to this, and please don’t apologise. It’s exactly what we needed, and sharing the ISINs makes it even easier for us.

You read it perfectly. These are funds you created yourself, and they don’t have any prices yet, so the warning is letting you know we can’t value them. As soon as a fund has at least one price, the warning goes away. Before your first price, we simply use that first price.

The good news: in 2.0, you can import a custom asset’s whole price history from a CSV or Excel file, so your funds will get proper values all the way back. And 2.0 brings something else for funds like yours that we think you’re going to love, but we’ll keep that a surprise for launch day. 🙂

Thanks again for always taking the time. It really does make Turbobulls better. 🙏
