Category grouping (or subcategories)

Currently Turbobulls supports only one level of categorization (categories). There is no way to group them or organize them.

Some people (not me) use the 50/30/20 budgeting style which groups 50% in needs, 30% wants and 20% savings. Then, they could have categories inside each group (housing, utilities, health, entertainment, etc).

Other people could want to organize by priority (for example "pay themselves first" or by nature of expense (fixed expenses, discretionary, irregular).

I would suggest you could add a second level. Not much more than that because a lot of granularity is also not good (makes people lose focus).

They could be called whatever you want (category groups and categories) or the traditional (category and subcategories).

But I think that a second level would allow for enough flexibility to let people choose the approach that works best for them, instead of just having one level of "categories" as currently Turbobulls has.

You’ll like this one: category groups are coming in 2.0, one level, just as you suggested. 50/30/20 (needs, wants, savings) works, fixed versus discretionary works, or whatever makes sense to you. Thank you for explaining the use cases so clearly; it helped.

So glad you like it! Using tags as a second level is a really clever workaround, and you’re not the only one who came up with it. When groups arrive in 2.0, that second level can become proper groups, and your tags are free again for what they do best: labels that cut across categories, like a holiday or a home project.
