Errors in investment import (portfolio transactions) via csv

I am trying to import my investment account transactions using the generic csv file, everything correclty mapped, but Turbobulls doesn't let me. Getting 147 errors: Asset is empty for selected asset columns ISIN (ISIN) or Code (Code)

But not every transaction has an asset because it is a deposit, or a withdrawal, or even a cash interest received for the cash balance of that account.

How can I import those transactions?

  1. Hello, I am new to the community but I also encountered this same problem. I just started my tiral and did some test csvs but I also get errors in lines that are deposits or withdrawals.

Thank you both, @turbo and @trent, and sorry for the wall of errors. That’s not a nice welcome, and I'd like to understand exactly where it went wrong for you, so we can fix it rather than just explain it.

First, the quick version of what’s happening: the generic CSV import only takes lines that belong to a holding, like buys, sells, dividends and splits. Deposits, withdrawals and interest on cash don’t belong to any asset, so it refuses them instead of guessing. You can get the rest in today by taking those lines out of the file, then adding the deposits and withdrawals as “Deposit to broker” or “Outside deposit” and the interest as “Broker income”.

To make it better, it would really help to know:

    1. Where the file comes from. Which broker or app exported it? Turbobulls 2.0, coming soon, adds importers for many brokers, including Degiro, Trade Republic, Saxo, eToro, Trading 212 and Revolut, plus apps like Portfolio Performance, Parqet and Snowball. Yours may already be covered, which would make all of this unnecessary.
    2. If it isn’t covered, or still gives errors: an anonymised copy of the file would make all the difference. Keep the header row as it is, keep the rows that fail, and change the numbers and anything personal. We only need the shape of the file, never your real figures.
    3. What kinds of lines it has besides trades. For example deposits, withdrawals, interest on cash, fees or tax.
    4. What you expected to happen to those lines. Should they show up as cash at the broker, as money coming from one of your accounts, or both?

If a sample is easier to send privately (which i recommend), email it to hello@turbobulls.com with “CSV import” in the subject, with your name and account numbers removed.

Whatever you tell us goes straight into the import we’re finishing for 2.0, and we’ll come back here with a way through for each of you.

I have an excel file with my information. I don't usually download csvs from brokers.
I have also a historic account statement I got from an insurance company in pdf. All of that are custom assets because they are "unit" funds created by the insurance company and not publicly traded. But I have prices.
I have used portfolio performance and imported from my spreadsheet over there, but have kept the spreadsheet as well.

In both (spreadsheet and pdf statements) I asked an AI agent to prepare csvs that could be imported to Turbobulls as custom csvs. And it prepared me a csv that matches your generic csv format, but now you confirm that the generic would not import deposits and withdawals.

I don't use any of the "supported" brokers. The custom csv should import all the transactions including deposits to the broker and withdrawals. Now that I am writing this, I remember that those are in fact transfers from bank accounts to brokerage accounts. But the csv import currently does not import the transfers between accounts.

In case of bank transactions I am importing only the last 12 months, but for investments the full history is relevant for metrics.

So I ask the other way around, can you provide a sample "csv" format from a broker that could import everything and I can ask the IA to put it in that brokers format so it gets imported?

Sorry for the long silence, @turbo. I wanted to answer with 2.0 in hand, and it’s out today.

Here’s the way through for your spreadsheet and the insurer’s statements:

      1. Trades: import them with the Generic CSV for investments. It now has example layouts to download and matches columns by their names.
      2. Deposits and withdrawals: put them in a second CSV for the Wallet, with From and To columns: your bank account in one, the broker in the other. They come in as deposits to or withdrawals from that broker.
      3. Unit fund prices: import each fund’s history from a file on its Prices tab.

You’re right that it should all go in one file. The investment CSV doesn’t take deposit lines yet, and that’s on our list because of your post.

And a lot of what else you asked for is live now:

      • Payees, with renaming, merging, and filling them in from your notes
      • Category groups
      • Categories, payees and transfers that come in with your bank files
      • Deleting categories several at a time
      • A new Breakdown that compares periods and shows who you paid

Some of them started or got improved because of your posts, so you’ve earned the Idea maker badge, and your two import bugs earned Bug hunter. Thank you for everything you’ve shared.
