Cash value computation in Overview page

Hi team!

After importing a great deal of transactions from different accounts and brokers, the total net worth value in the home dashboard is not correct (unless I went broke already!).

It may well be that I have done something wrong, but cross-checking with other pages suggest that I probably haven't. This is what I see.

In the Overview page:

  • Total net worth: X
  • Market value (142%): Y
  • Cash (-42%): Z1

In Overview > Cash & Income tab, I see a different Cash balance value: Z2, the correct one. This one matches the total in the Wallet page.

In Overview > Portfolio tab, I see Market value: Y. Also, correct and matches the total in Portfolio page.

So it seems that, unless I have done something wrong, only Cash Z1 value is not correctly computed, affecting the result of the Total net worth formula.

Regards!

Hi, and thanks for such a clear write-up. Cross-checking it across the pages like that makes this much easier to get to the bottom of.

Short version: you almost certainly have not gone broke, and I don't think you've done anything wrong.

The two numbers are measuring different things

The Cash figure on the Overview page is not the same thing as the Cash balance on the Cash & Income tab.

    • Overview -> Cash = your wallet cash plus the cash sitting at your brokers
    • Cash & Income -> Cash balance = the wallet on its own, which is why it matches your Wallet page

So the two are meant to differ, and they differ by exactly your broker cash. If your Overview Cash is coming out negative, that points to broker cash being below zero.

I should be upfront that this is an educated guess rather than something I can confirm. Your transactions are encrypted on your device, so I genuinely cannot see your numbers from here. Only you can check.

Two places to check, about a minute each

    1. The Recommendations section, further down the same Overview page. If broker cash has gone below zero, there should already be a warning there called Broker Cash Below Zero, telling you how much. It sorts by importance, so if you don't spot it straight away it may be a little further down the list.

    2. The Broker cash section. Open the Cash & Income tab and scroll past the wallet cards. It lists each broker and flags any that are in the red, so you can see exactly which accounts are involved.

    If some brokers are negative

The usual reason is that the import brought in your trades but not the deposits that funded them.

We rebuild broker cash from what you have recorded, so every purchase subtracts money that was never recorded arriving, and that shortfall gets counted against your net worth. That would explain both the negative Cash and the net worth looking too low, while Market value stays correct.

The fix is to record the money you put into each broker. Use Add transaction -> Deposit to broker, which moves money from one of your accounts into a broker. Once each broker reflects what actually arrived, both numbers should come right.

Two things changed because of your message
    • The Cash figure now explains what it is made of, instead of leaving you to work it out. If it goes below zero, it says why and what to do about it.
    • The import itself now warns you up front when a file would leave a broker with negative cash, rather than letting you discover it later.

If you tell me which brokers you imported from, I can tell you whether that format includes deposits. Some do, some only carry the trades.

Thanks again for taking the time to lay it all out properly.

I noticed that the tooltip for Cash in the Overview page shows an explanation of the negative value together with instructions on how to fix it: "Why is this lower than my Wallet page?"

I might have missed it yesterday. That's what I needed!

You did not miss it! It genuinely was not there yesterday.

Your report is why it exists. We shipped it earlier today, along with a warning during import that flags this up front, so the next person never has to work it out at all.

It is also built from your own numbers rather than being a generic note. It names what is sitting in your wallet, what the shortfall at your brokers comes to, and it changes what it says depending on whether your broker cash is above or below the threshold. So it should always be describing your situation, not the general case.

Our replies crossed in the post 😄 so do have a look at mine above when you get a chance. It covers what to check if any of your brokers are still showing negative, and how to put the missing deposits back.

Really glad it landed at the right moment. Thanks for the nudge.
